Life in a Northern Town
A free creative writing opportunity for 16 – 25 year olds in Yorkshire

“I finally feel completely unashamed in calling myself a writer. Coming from a place of being told I couldn’t be a playwright, this has been invaluable. I felt comfortable and at my creative home from the get go.”

Since 2021, Northern Broadsides have been supporting young writers across the North of England to find their voice, tell their stories, and take their first steps into the world of playwriting.

The project is delivered in partnership with Blackpool Grand Theatre and Customs House, South Shields. Each partner runs their own cohort with writers who come together to share learning and support each other’s script development.

With free online masterclasses, in-person residencies in Blackpool and Hebden Bridge, and sessions led by acclaimed writers and playwrights including Simon Stephens, Chris Thorpe, Carmen Nasr, Sophie Swithinbank, Sarah Woods and Maria Ferguson, the programme has helped a new generation of Northern storytellers develop their craft and confidence.

Writers have also seen their work come to life, performed by professional actors via in person sharing events; some stories have even been published and performed on our annual winter podcast!

We’re passionate about discovering and nurturing the writers of the future – those whose voices might otherwise go unheard.

Right now, we’re not accepting new applications – but this is far from the end.
Watch this space for updates on how the work created by our brilliant young participants will be shared, and what’s next for Life in a Northern Town.

“I just gained so much inspiration from hearing other people’s ideas, and listening to their writing. It was just fantastic to be around like minded people, hearing about their processes. It was also amazing to hear and be in a space where I was able to connect with industry professionals in a relaxed atmosphere – ask their advice and feel confident moving forward.”
