Iron People Artwork

We are inviting people from Calderdale to join workshops in poetry and acting as part of our community project, Iron People, inspired by Ted Hughes’ The Iron Man and The Iron Woman stories.

This announcement comes after Calderdale Council announced Northern Broadsides’ Iron People project as a key commission as part of CultureDale, Calderdale’s Year of Culture 2024. Iron People is a community project working across Calderdale, developed alongside local residents with opportunities to take part and build skills in writing, acting, movement, puppetry, illustration and performance.

The three poetry workshops will be led by West Yorkshire author, Ian Humphreys, and are suitable for beginners aged to experienced writers ages 16+. Entry is pay what you decide.

The free acting taster sessions are for people living in Calderdale aged 18+ who would like to find out more about playing a part in Iron People (not for professional actors or those with formal drama training).

Other creative workshops for families and young people to be announced soon.

“We’re very excited to launch the next stage of our Iron People project with these creative workshops for local people in Calderdale. Come have fun, share some stories, and find out how you can be part of this unique creative opportunity!”

Laurie Sansom, Artistic Director and Joint CEO of Northern Broadsides
