Chris accepted the award for Outstanding Achievement in Theatre sponsored by Chauvet Professional.

This award recognises lighting design excellence in Theatre and Television in the UK.

The lighting was one of the production’s most striking elements, creating a feeling of psychological unease and mounting dread. Much of it was operated by the actors themselves, who manipulated angle-poise lamps and handheld torches to direct the audience’s focus. Lamps were repositioned to evoke the stark atmosphere of an interrogation room. A single shaft of light through a skylight illuminated Raskolnikov’s cramped bedsit, where miniature models of St Petersburg’s buildings lit up floor by floor.

“Crime and Punishment was a big ambitious 3 hander, directed and adapted by Northern Broadsides’ Artistic Director, Laurie Sansom. We’ve talked for several years about lighting a show almost entirely with practicals. And this was the perfect project. My kit list was 2 angle poise lamps, battery powered on desks, 3 photographer’s floods with pots on the back operated by the acting company, 2 camping lamps which became door posts and 4 small hand held lamps… Not a meat rack or LED back end in sight!”
