What might Northern Broadsides look like in the third decade of the twenty-first century?

Over the past 26 years the theatre company has undoubtedly contributed to a major change in British theatre. Northern Broadsides officially began in 1992 when Barrie Rutter created a company focused on “Northern voices, doing classical work in non-velvet spaces”.  Wherever they performed, this radical new aesthetic excited critics, audiences and funders. More than two decades on, it is gratifying to hear that regional voices are no longer a rarity on the stages of UK theatres and the “distinctive identity and energetic voice of the North of England” is sought after and valued.

So, what next?  How might our mission “to bring new focus to the world’s classic texts, inspired and informed by the heritage, contemporary culture and diverse voices of our Northern towns and cities” be interpreted in 2019 and beyond? How do we make theatre “to inspire change, support diversity and promote a better understanding of the world in which we live”?

These are the inspirational challenges we are inviting the joint leadership Team of Northern Broadsides to tackle.

WORK PLACEMENTS

We are open to having observers in our rehearsals and offer work placements to students (over 16 years old) interested in various aspects of theatre (often Stage Management or Costume). We only produce two shows a year so places are very limited, but we still encourage you to enquire and apply for a place.

As requests for placements are high we are only able to accommodate a few people per year so those positions are offered to people with relevant experience, who have a genuine passion for a particular theatre discipline and who are actively considering careers in theatre.
